The University of New Mexico and the Town of Taos sponsored a housing study conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Mitchell of the Institute for Applied Business Research and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research of UNM
The biggest finding of the study is not the biggest surprise – there is a severe shortage of affordable housing in Taos.
Mitchell warned that in 10 to 15 years, without some kind of intervention, Taos will experience a limited labor supply and the community’s workability will fail.
He also said that even the idea of what is affordable is sort of a hot potato.
He added that in order to address the affordable housing shortage, Taos is going to have to look at that term, and define it across several different scales.
